- What is ballroom dancing?
It includes dances such as Waltz, Tango, Cha-Cha, Salsa, Swing, and on and on. Our definition includes
just about all partner dancing.
Check out our "About Ballroom Dancing" page.
It shows you everything you need to know.
- Where can I "Ballroom Dance"
The Madonna Inn plays a wide variety of music and is a great place to dance. Its free too! Club officers attend every wednesday and can answere any of your questions.
- Do I need dance experience?
No. That is what our lessons are for!
- Do I need a partner?
No. Many dancers come alone, though that doesn't mean you shouldn't invite all of your friends!
- How much does it cost? How much would it cost elsewhere?
Per-night and membership prices can be found within the Lessons / Events page.
Comparing to dance studios, this is a very good deal. Group lessons usually cost twice as much at most studios.
- What do I wear?
Come as you are. However, we recommend that you wear shoes that won't slip off your feet and that have a
smooth sole (I.E. leather or smooth plastic) that won't grip the floor too much.
The club holds dance parties which may be formal or may have a theme, but lessons have no dress requirement.
- How often do you meet?
The club meets for lessons on sunday evenings. For those who wish to really improve their dance technique, we provide a
Technique Class on thursdays. And yes... we hold many dances through out the year. Check out our Lessons / Events
page for more info.
- Where do you meet?
Sunday lessons are held at the Oddfellow's Hall on Dana Street in San Luis Obispo.
Technique Class is held in Architecture Building, room 05-225 on Cal Poly Campus.
- Where can I dance the dances I learn?
Visit our "SLO Dance Community" page to find details on the local dancing community.
- What if I get stuck dancing with someone I don't like?
At lessons, we rotate partners every several minutes. Dancing with a variety of people allows you to learn much better.
- Do members compete?
Yes. Club members interested in competing are encouraged to join the Cal Poly DanceSport Team. The team participates in one to two competitions a quarter. It's a blast, so check it out.
- Can I help out?
Of course. We can always use enthusiastic members to help out. Contact one of the officers to find out how.
- Can you ballroom dance to contemporary music?
Oh Yes. You can dance to love ballads, Pop, Rock and Roll, Funk, Disco... it goes on and on.
- How do I know what is danced to a particular song?
After you become familiar with a variety of dances, it becomes easier to recognize each song. Feel free to ask us what you can dance to a song at any of our events.
- Do you teach Salsa? Are you the Salsa Club? I want to learn lots of Salsa.
Yes, we do teach Salsa in addition to the rest of the ballroom dances. But no, we are not the Salsa Club. You should check out our friends at the
Salsa Club.
- ok, do you swing? are you the swing club? i'm a swing nut.
yes, swing is considered a ballroom dance. but no, we are not the swing club. if you are crazy
about swing, then check out the
swing club.
- What is the difference between the Ballroom Dance Club and DanceSport Team?
The Ballroom Dance Club's goal is to encourage community members to
discover the joys of Ballroom Dancing. We do this through beginning
lessons, workshops, dances, and other fun social events. The
DanceSport
Team's goal is to support and train a team of dancers who enjoy performing and
competing. They do this through intermediate workshops, team training,
community performances, and sponsoring trips to competitions. Both
organizations work closely together to support each other's missions in
promoting dancing.
